Cochin Shipyard Limited has contracted CMA CGM to build six LNG dual-fuel container vessels, marking a significant advancement in India's shipbuilding sector.
Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has signed a contract with French shipping giant CMA CGM to build six 1,700 TEU feeder container vessels equipped with dual-fuel engines, reported Delhi's New India Express.
The agreement was signed in New Delhi on 18 February between CSL chairman and managing director Jose VJ and CMA CGM chairman and chief executive Rodolphe Saade, in the presence of Minister of State for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Shantanu Thakur.
The ships will be powered by dual-fuel engines capable of operating on liquefied natural gas as well as conventional fuel. LNG-powered vessels produce lower emissions than traditional ships and are seen as an important step towards greener maritime transport.
The contract marks a significant milestone for India's shipbuilding sector, positioning CSL as a builder of advanced, environmentally friendly container ships for global trade.
