CMA CGM unveils the CMA CGM Eugenie, a 15,000-TEU dual fuel methanol ship, enhancing its fleet and addressing emissions challenges.
CMA CGM has officially launched the CMA CGM Eugenie, a 15,000-TEU dual fuel methanol vessel, marking a significant milestone in its fleet renewal strategy, according to Breakbulk News from the Amsterdam area.
The ship was christened under the command of Captain Svilen Santana, with Professor Bai Xiang from Shanghai Maritime University serving as the godmother. CMA CGM China general manager Esra Bora was also present at the ceremony.
This vessel underscores the increasing importance of fuel strategy at the board level for liner shipping, as regulatory pressures and customer scrutiny regarding emissions continue to intensify.
Upon delivery, the Eugenie will operate on the Phoenician Express service, which connects Asia, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean. Its methanol dual fuel capability allows the ship to switch between conventional fuel and methanol, depending on availability.
This flexibility helps mitigate operational risks but raises concerns for ports and suppliers regarding the availability and pricing volatility of methanol.
The presence of senior maritime academics and executives at the ceremony highlights that the transition to alternative fuels is a structural shift that is already progressing along major east-west trade routes.
