CMA CGM invests 106 billion Kenyan Shillings to modernize Mombasa Port, enhancing cargo capacity and regional trade connections.
French maritime and logistics giant CMA CGM has agreed to invest 106 billion Kenyan Shillings (approximately $820 million) for the modernization and expansion of two terminals at Mombasa Port as part of its collaboration with the Kenyan government.
Operating in Kenya since 2005, the company stated that this investment will increase the cargo handling capacity at the port, strengthen regional trade corridors, and enhance Kenya's integration into global shipping networks in response to the growing demand for maritime transportation.
The planned modernization efforts are expected to support the increasing trade volumes, improve supply chain efficiency, and transform Mombasa into a stronger trade hub serving local, regional, and international markets. The project is also said to strengthen the inland logistics networks connecting Kenya to East and Central Africa.
Mombasa Port, one of the largest ports in East Africa, plays a critical role in the foreign trade of many landlocked countries, including Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
This investment stands out as part of Kenya's strategy to modernize port infrastructure through a public-private partnership model. The Kenya National Treasury had announced in April 2025 that it adopted the public-private partnership model for the modernization of Mombasa Port and the Port of Lamu. Financing is planned to be provided through infrastructure bonds offered to long-term investors such as pension funds and insurance companies.
CMA CGM stated that the agreement signed with the Kenyan government is part of its goals to enhance port infrastructure across Africa, strengthen logistics integration, and decarbonize transportation chains.
The company is currently actively involved in the operation and development of nine container terminals in Africa. These include the Kribi Container Terminal, Lekki Deep Sea Port, and the new deep-water terminal at the Port of Pointe-Noire.
