Chinese students studying abroad fell to a decade low in 2025, with a significant rise in returnees, signaling a shift in international education trends.
The number of Chinese students studying abroad has dropped to its lowest level in 10 years, reports Caixin.
Data from China's Ministry of Education showed that 570,600 students went overseas in 2025, down nearly 20 percent from the 2019 peak of 703,500. This figure has returned to levels last seen in 2016, signaling a structural shift for Western universities that have long relied on full-tuition-paying Chinese students.
The ministry also reported a surge in returnees. In 2025, 535,600 students came back to China after completing their studies, an increase of 40,600 from 2024 and 120,000 from 2023. Between 1978 and 2025, 9.46 million Chinese studied abroad, with 6.98 million—more than 87 percent—returning to pursue careers at home.
The release marked the first time since 2020 that the government resumed publishing official data on outbound students, underscoring the scale of change in international education flows.
