The US Senate Commerce Committee has approved a bill to enforce a ban on Chinese automakers in the US market, raising concerns for companies like Mercedes-Benz.

The US Senate Commerce Committee has approved legislation to strengthen a government ban on Chinese automakers entering the American market, reported Reuters.

Senator Ted Cruz, chair of the committee, warned that without changes, the bill's provision banning companies with more than 15 percent Chinese ownership could block Mercedes-Benz from selling vehicles in the United States, given its nearly 20 percent Chinese investment.

Senator Bernie Moreno stated that Mercedes-Benz would have until 2030 to comply and could still obtain waivers if necessary. The legislation is aimed at tightening restrictions on Chinese vehicle makers seeking access to the US market.
