Protesters linked to the BDS movement target MSC vessels, alleging they transport materials for the Israeli military, urging action from unions and governments.
A group of protesters linked to the BDS (boycott, divestment, and sanctions) movement has launched a new campaign targeting MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company container ships, which are alleged to carry raw materials for the Israeli army. Activists have called on unions, civil society organizations, and political parties to get involved in pressuring Mediterranean governments, particularly in Italy, Greece, and Spain.
Two ships are in the spotlight: MSC Vega and MSC Danit.
As part of the campaign, two of the company's vessels operating on the Mediterranean route have been highlighted. It was noted that MSC Vega operates between Greece, Turkey, Italy, and Spain, while MSC Danit is reported to have come to the Mediterranean after loading cargo from India and will stop at ports in Portugal and Egypt.
Activists claimed that MSC Danit was carrying approximately eight containers of Indian-origin steel intended for defense industry companies in Israel. Additionally, it was alleged that a previous shipment contained a total of 600 tons of 'military steel' in 23 containers.
Inspection and worker response at ports.
The group claimed that they ensured inspections of the cargo in Italy. In Greece, it was reported that dock workers adopted a stance of not handling military-related cargo destined for Israel.
It was mentioned that MSC Danit arrived in Israel on March 23, while local authorities did not make any statements regarding potential sanctions or interventions.
Pressure on shipping companies is increasing.
Similar protests have become more frequent in recent years following Israel's attacks on Gaza. Activists are targeting numerous commercial vessels alleged to carry explosives and military equipment.
Some ships owned by Maersk Line Ltd., which operates under contract with the U.S. government, had previously altered their planned port calls in Spain due to similar allegations. The U.S. Federal Maritime Commission announced that an investigation into these developments had been initiated and that sanctions could be imposed on Spain.
The issue is also on the agenda among Maersk shareholders.
The matter has sparked discussions among shareholders of AP Moller Maersk. An activist shareholder group, Kritiske Aktionærer, submitted a proposal to stop the company's transportation of military cargo to Israel by 2025, but the proposal was rejected.
The group has reintroduced a similar proposal for 2026, demanding a halt to all military shipments, including parts for F-35 fighter jets. Maersk management stated that military cargo is transported in accordance with international regulations and standards, with particular sensitivity shown in conflict zones.
While the company's board of directors did not support the proposal, it was reported that the proposal was once again rejected in the shareholder vote.
