Samsun's Mayor Doğan reveals plans to move the Bandırma Ferry to Tütün Pier, enhancing the city's historical tourism by 2026.
Mayor Doğan stated that the works of the 'Open-Air Independence Square Museum Project,' being carried out in the Samsun Governorate square, Kurtuluş Road, and Panorama Museum area, are continuing uninterrupted. He emphasized that they aim to create a center that befits Samsun's historical role in the National Struggle.
Highlighting that Samsun is the city where the torch of the National Struggle was ignited with Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's arrival on May 19, 1919, Doğan said, 'The Bandırma Ferry, which brought Atatürk to Samsun, is currently located in East Park and hosts approximately 500,000 visitors annually. However, a significant portion of these visitors leave the city without stopping by the city center. Therefore, we want to make the city center an attraction point again. We will also move the Bandırma Ferry to Tütün Pier by May 19, 2026, for this purpose.'
Samsun is also a city that holds the title of 'Independence City.' The Independence Medal, awarded in 1924 for its contributions to the liberation struggle, was brought to Samsun and is now on display,' he added.
Doğan announced that the ship museum would be moved from land to Tütün Pier, stating, 'We have spoken with a company from Istanbul regarding the transportation of the Bandırma Ferry. The ship museum will be moved from land, and the transition points and all details have been planned. It will be placed parallel to the sea, facing one side towards Bafra and the other towards Çarşamba.'
