Ferry Collides with Dock in Greece: Passengers Escape Accident Unharmed
In an incident that occurred on Monday night at the Port of Rafina in Greece, a car ferry collided with the dock at the port entrance, causing the structure to split in two. While there were no casualties or injuries reported, the ferry continued its operations with minimal damage.
The ferry named Andros King, which was operating a route from Mykonos Island to Rafina, had approximately 280 passengers, 60 crew members, and numerous cars and trucks on board. It was reported that during the accident, winds of about force 5 were blowing from the north in the area.
Ro-Ro type ferries approaching Rafina Port maneuver within the concrete breakwater to perform loading and unloading operations via their stern ramps. According to initial assessments, the Andros King ferry struck the concrete breakwater during a turning maneuver.
Images shared from the scene showed that some sections of the breakwater had been displaced and the structure had split in two. However, the passengers on the ferry escaped the accident without injury. It was noted that only paint scratches occurred on the swollen bow of the vessel, and no serious damage was sustained.
The Andros King ferry, which was allowed to continue its voyage by the authorities, resumed its scheduled commercial service the following day at around 07:50 AM.
