The cargo ship White Line ran aground in the Sea of Marmara due to severe weather, with no injuries or pollution reported as salvage efforts await calmer seas.
A cargo ship named White Line has run aground on the northern shores of the Sea of Marmara due to severe winds and storm conditions affecting the region.
The vessel arrived off Marmara Port and dropped anchor on December 30. On Saturday, at approximately 14:30 local time, the ship drifted from its anchorage and ran aground near the tourist area known as Santos Beach. Local news source Sözcü reported that the vessel was caught in a violent storm prior to the grounding.
Authorities have confirmed that there were no injuries or marine pollution resulting from the incident. As of Monday, the ship was reported to be aground under the supervision of the Tahlisiye-12 search and rescue vessel. According to Sözcü's report, sea conditions were unsuitable for diving inspections on Sunday, and a detailed technical examination will be conducted once the sea calms.
White Line is a coastal cargo ship built in 1985, measuring 75 meters in length. Owned and operated by Turkish interests, the vessel engages in regional trade across the Mediterranean, Aegean, and Black Seas, with routes extending from Malta to Port Said and the Kerch Strait, according to AIS data.
The ship has garnered attention over the years for numerous deficiencies recorded during port state control (PSC) inspections. It was noted that over 40 new deficiencies were identified last year alone, and PSC inspectors have reported at least one non-compliance in nearly all inspections conducted since 2017.
Among the deficiencies identified in recent inspections are critical items such as fire dampers and fire doors. Authorities have stated that developments regarding the ship's condition and the salvage process will become clearer depending on weather conditions.
