AMAZON AIR has launched a daily cargo service at Louis Armstrong International Airport during a year of rapid expansion for its freight sector, reports New Orleans CityBusiness.

Amazon, which began its air fleet in 2016, said in June that it was leasing 12 Boeing 767-300 converted freighters to join its existing 70 aircraft.

Amazon has experienced a growing customer base during the Covid pandemic, transporting PPE supplies for Amazon employees, health care workers and relief organisations across the US.

The company also has expanded its on-the-ground operations this year, opening regional air hubs at Lakeland Linder International Airport in Lakeland, Florida and at San Bernardino International Airport.

In May, Amazon Air began operating at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Austin, Texas, and Luis Munoz Mar??n International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Amazon's $1.5 billion central air hub at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport is scheduled to open in 2021.
