SOME 800 container trucks were stuck at Vietnam's border with China in Lang Son Province amid an increase in the transportation of agricultural produce in the middle of the harvest season, reports Vietnam News Agency.
Despite being able only to process half of the number of container trucks it receives daily, the Dong Dang International Border Gate has been welcoming over 1,000 container trucks each day.
Similarly, other border gates in Lang Son have been struggling with large numbers of container trucks carrying jackfruit, durian, mango and dragon fruit.
These trucks have to wait in the parking area for their turn to enter China as exporters hurry to deliver the fruits during their harvest season in Vietnam.
To alleviate the congestion, the Lang Son Department of Industry and Trade has advised exporters to reduce the number of containers at the border and utilise other forms of transport.
This problem of container truck congestion at the border gate has persisted for years, especially during the Covid crisis from 2020 to last year, when safety measures were implemented, and thousands of containers had to wait to enter China.
In an effort to increase official trade, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has planned to curb unofficial trade (low-value goods crossing the border with minimal paperwork) starting in 2025.
This approach will require official trade to be made with contracts, proof of payment, and taxes, and it will prevent congestion at land borders while also bringing more goods into the tax net.
