THE Port of Sohar has docked a 14,000-TEU vessel at its terminal, reports the Oman Daily Observer.

Yang Ming's 14,000-TEU Panama-flagged YM Welcome departed on Saturday, August 1. Meanwhile, another 14,000-TEUer is due to call on August 13.

Hong Kong's Hutchison Ports Sohar's management team organised a special ceremony with a thankful exhibition to the ship's commander to celebrate the new ship.

The celebration includes notable names such as Dr Rashid Mohamed Hamed al Kiyumi, Director General of Maritime Affairs, Ministry of Transport, Oman and representatives from the director general of customs in Sohar.

'The first half of 2020 has been challenging for the world due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Nevertheless our terminal is maintaining 24/7 operations. I am proud that our terminal and our people have strived to continue to support and serve the trade in the Middle East by undertaking all health and safety precautions,' said Hutchison Ports Sohar chief executive Anacin Kum..

Hutchison Ports Sohar possesses a total of 16 direct services. India Express Service by Oman Shipping, Asia Gulf Express Service by THE Alliance, and a regional service by the Mediterranean Shipping Company were obtained in the first half.

The company reported an increase of 23 per cent in first quarter project shipments compared to the same timeframe last year.

Meanwhile, the number of vessel calls surged by 18 per cent, and the transshipment volumes and reefer exports recorded a year-on-year growth of 36 per cent and 24 per cent sequentially.
