THE Port of Zhuhai, opposite Macau, expects container volume will increase 18.6 per cent to 1.44 million TEU and total cargo throughput will rise 7.74 per cent to 76.23 million tonnes in 2016.
By 2020, port authorities intend to more than double that to 3.1 million TEU and 170 million tonnes of cargo, partly due to South America trade and investment in Pakistan, according to the targets laid out in its current 2016-20 five-year plan, reported IHS Media Fairplay.
According to the plan, Zhuhai will have the capacity to handle 3.78 million TEU and 200 million tonnes of cargo by 2020.
Driven by Beijing's "One Belt, One Road" (OBOR) trade initiative, the port is getting involved in the construction of the Guiyang-Guangzhou-South Asia international logistics corridor, which is expected to connect 15 cities and five countries via sea-rail-road transport. The project is scheduled for completion within two to three years.
Zhuhai Port Holdings Group has also signed a deal with China Overseas Port Holdings on the construction of Gwadar port in Pakistan, with a contract value of CNY6.5 billion (US$980 million). It is believed that this project will promote co-operation between the Pearl River Delta and Pakistan under the OBOR plan.
Trading with Portuguese-speaking nations, especially Brazil, is another focus of the port over the next five years. A direct route from Zhuhai to the Brazilian port of Vitoria will open later this year.
