YANTIAN International Container Terminals (YICT) representatives and
government officials are celebrating in Shenzhen the facility's
milestone of handling its 100 millionth TEU.
This throughput record has been achieved within the first 18.5 years of operations, meaning that Yantian Port has evolved from a small fishing village into one of the world's busiest container terminals.
Since it started in 1994 YICT has, with its geographical advantages of having natural deep-water berths, state-of-the-art terminal facilities, efficient clearance procedures and comprehensive transportation network, become a preferred port of call for mega-sized containerships.
A statement from terminal officials said every mega-vessel with a carrying capacity in excess of 10,000 TEU has called at YICT, which is part of Hong Kong's Hutchison Port Holdings. The facility is equipped with 150 electric rubber-tyre gantry cranes and 280 LNG-powered container tractors.
The terminal operator has over the years, received 200 distinctions for its impressive performance levels as well as environmental protection, port safety and security, and corporate social responsibility initiatives.
It takes part of the credit for facilitating the growth of Shenzhen's economy and helping the city achieve the largest export volume of any city in China for 19 consecutive years. YICT also contributes to the city's position as an important gateway to South China and a key logistic hub within Asia Pacific.
