THE Port of Xiamen, opposite Taiwan, posted a 13.8 per cent year-on-year increase in container volume to 5.83 million TEU as well as an 11.8 per cent rise in overall cargo to 141 million tonnes, Xinhua reports.
Both of Xiamen's container volume and cargo tonnage grew faster than the national average rate. The box throughput climbed 6.4 per cent faster than the national average while the tonnage grew three per cent faster.
Xiamen's throughput of laden boxes in this period increased substantially by 15.5 per cent to 3.96 million TEU. The containerised cargo amounted to 52.38 million tonnes, up 19.8 per cent.
Transshipments at the port also experienced rapid growth. In the first nine months, Xiamen's transshipment volume soared 50 per cent to 1.38 million TEU. Domestic transshipments rocketed 123.2 per cent to 659,500 TEU. Feeder boxes increased 30.8 per cent to 481,700 TEU.
Containers generated on European shipping lanes climbed 10.7 per cent to 1.19 million TEU. Those from the Taiwan trade increased 12.5 per cent to 295,100 TEU. Those from Korean lanes grew 22.2 per cent to 193,700 TEU.
At the same time, Xiamen's coal throughput also grew robustly by 31.9 per cent to 16.92 million tonnes. The fast growth in coal throughput was brought about by the recovery of China's economy, which boosted the consumption of electricity and a fall in coal prices.
