LADEN import boxes increased eight per cent on the east coast as the increased seven per cent as the west coast was only up five per cent an indication how cargo is moving permanently from one side of America to the other.
The east coast import market share, according to PIERS data, increased to 40 per cent from 39 per cent while the west coast went from 55 to 54 per cent.
In the fourth quarter when the west coast port congestion was at its worst, the east coast saw a 13 per cent increase in loaded imports, the Gulf saw a 12 per cent increase, while the west coast saw only a five per cent increase, according to PIERS.
Major logistics and warehouse corporation CenterPoint finds that shippers are fed up with west coast congestion and are looking to move more goods through the east coast, said company development chief Michael Murphy.
West coast congestion persuaded office furniture provider Friant & Associates to open a 375,000-square foot facility at CenterPoint's logistics park in Suffolk, Virginia.
"With a new manufacturing point in the Virginia, we can better serve our customers and partners on the east coast," said company CEO Paul Friant.
"There is a great deal of analysis going on within organisations on how do we set the plate for the future so we can avoid current congestion," a major retailer told Newark's Journal of Commerce. "It's causing a lot of sourcing people to really sit back and take a look."
Add to that, the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach plan to impose new costs on truckers, railways, shippers, steamship lines and terminal operators as they accelerate an activist environmental campaign, reports the American Journal of Transportation.
The ports will no longer restrict their role as landlords, allowing tenants a free hand, but instead follow up on mandates like the clean truck programme and night-time deliveries to reduce daytime congestion and emissions.
According to Port of Los Angeles CEO Gene Seroka, the two San Pedro Bay ports are entering a new partnership that will be "raising the bar in the next step on clean air" in which environmental improvements will be the priority.
Mr Seroka said he wants to be "an advocate for the environmental community" with the maritime industry and asked participants to "help me" be a better advocate for their concerns.
