WALLEM Ship Management has been presented the Safety Award at this year's Lloyds List Asia Awards in Singapore for undertaking a special study that has reduced lost time injury (LTI) rates.
Director of safety and insurance Vijay Soman, said the study by the company's safety team identified "red thread" commonalities linking lost time injury events.
The changes in managing crew and training have resulted in the company's LTI rates falling 30 per cent in the 12 months to April.
"With clear links between safety and a seafarers' length of time on board, the point of time in their contract, and their experience with Wallem, we can better plan seafarer teams and combine individuals who are more at risk, with those who can mitigate risk of accident or injury," said Capt Soman.
"The results of the study also provided us with more understanding and knowledge to tailor training programmes for seafarers both on board and ashore," he said.
