VIETNAM has accommodated its largest mega containership with the arrival of the 16,020-TEU CMA CGM Marco Polo at Cai Mep International Terminal (CMIT) that is operating the French shipping line's FAL 3 Asia to Europe service.
The vessel's call at the one million-TEU capacity CMIT, a joint venture between Maersk's APMT, Vinalines and Saigon Port since 2011, is a sign of the modern deepsea terminal's importance to the south Vietnamese economy.
CMIT sees 2019 as another year of continued double-digit growth in container volume and believes it will both assist and benefit from the strong economic growth of south Vietnam and its increasing global connectivity, reports London's Port Technology.
CMIT general director Jan Bandestra said of the CMA CGM Marco Polo: 'It's a significant size vessel, the largest CMIT has ever handled, and we are privileged to have the confidence from the Ocean Alliance and CMA CGM to undertake the responsibility to operate this vessel safely, efficiently and quickly.'
CMA CGM general director Bruno Gutton added: 'CMA CGM is fully mobilised to support Vietnam on its impressive path to rapid economic growth and will help shape its logistics and maritime infrastructures.
'We are confident that Vietnam will develop into a key international maritime and logistics hub in the coming years,' revealed Mr Gutton.
