US Coastguard supporting SAR operation
Four empty inflatable liferafts have been discovered where in the Bering Strait by the fishing vessel "Karolina" which belongs to the Sakhalin fleet of the Nikkor company.
The ship also found four of the survivors, among them three Philipinos and a Malay, from the "Oryong 501", and a Russian, Alexander Storozhenkov, 27, who was aboard the Korean ship as an observer. All of them were in satisfactory condition.
Two other crewmembers from the "Oryong 501" were rescued by the Magadan-registered "trawler Zaliv Zabiyaka".
Also the US Coast Guard assisted the Kamchatka Border Guard Directorate and the good Samaritans in their search effort off the coast of Chukotka.
A Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak HC-130 Hercules airplane crew and the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter "Munro" with an embarked Air Station Kodiak MH-65 Dolphin helicopter were dispatched to the scene in the morning of Dec 1.
There were also five good Samaritan vessels on scene assisting in the search for survivors; their commitment to helping was commendable.
The Kamchatka Border Guard Directorate reported the vessel was carrying 62 crewmembers at the time of the sinking; seven crewmembers in a raft were rescued by a good Samaritan, 54 crewmembers are unaccounted for and one crewmember has been confirmed deceased. One dead body was seen floating in the area but could not be recovered due to stormy weather.
Weather on scene was reported as half-mile visibility with a 250-foot ceiling, 22-foot waves and water temperature at 57 degrees.
