Ship flooded following grounding
On Mar 8 the "Yusuf Cepnioglu" after having run aground in a rocky are north of Mykonos at 3.30 a.m. was pounded by the surf, down by the stern and listing to port.
The crew of 14, all Turkish nationals, had abandonded ship in the night. 11 were rescued with a Syros Coast Guard vessel and the other three with a Super Puma helicopter.
The deck containers partially toppled and went over board. Engine room and cargo holds were flooded after the grounding. A small oil pollution was sighted in the surrounding area, and the Coast Guard laid out oil barriers to prevent athe spill from spreading.
The "Os Elakt" of the Coast Guard, a tug and three others ships arrived on scene from Piraeus.
The Regional Pollution Incident Response Plan was activated.
The Greek Navy Accident Investigation Service ( ELYDNA ) of the Ministry of Marine sent a team to the grounding site where the ship was pounded by the surf, down by the stern and listing. On site were northern winds of five beaufort at the time of the grounding.
Unconfirmed reports indicated that a lighthouse was not working properly.
