State officials wer etrying to determine how much oil may have leaked into the environment after the "Powhatan" sank near Sitka late on Apr 20, 2017, at the Samson Tug & Barge dock in Starrigavan Bay about seven miles North of Sitka at 10:15 p.m. Initially the tug sank to a depth of 15 meters but then the wreck shifted downslope about 330 meters to the Northwest before coming to a rest under 60 meters of water. There were approximately 325 gallons of lube oil, 12 gallons of diesel, and possible sludge in the bottom of the main tanks. The released amount of oil was unknown. The Southeast Petroleum Response Organization (SEAPRO) and the U.S. Coast Guard were responding to the incident. A boom has been deployed to contain any oil at the surface and responders are trying to recover any spillage and assess the shoreline. An underwater camera will be utilized to confirm the vessel’s location and monitor petroleum discharges. SEAPRO will continue shoreline assessment and boom management.”
