The 'Squall' sank on Sep 8, 2018, at 06.55 a.m. two miles south of the Kerch Bridge in stormy weather. The crew of seven went into a life raft. At 11.30 a.m. the tug 'Mercury', deployed in the SAR operation, spotted the raft but initially could not approach it because of high waves. The castaways were later rescued by a cargo ship. They reported their tug had been unable to hold against waves because of a steering failure.
