THE 1,908-TEU Marshall Islands-flagged Purple Beach's toxic cargo of fertiliser caught fire on its way from Immingham near Hull on the English east coast to the German port of Brake near Bremerhaven.
Although extinguished, the crew evacuated the 1998-built geared box ship, fearing toxic gas and an explosion from the burning fertiliser, reported American Shipper.
The Shanghai-built 33,722-dwt ship is operated by short sea carrier Macs Shipping and was carrying large amounts of highly flammable fertiliser.
The vessel was been deemed too dangerous to board and that officials fear the ship could sink in the event of an explosion.
BBC News reports German officials have told residents near Bremerhaven "to keep windows and doors shut as a strong smell was reported in the area" and that the fire was still burning.
Thirty-six people, including 22 crew members, were admitted to hospital for inhaling toxic gas, the product of burning fertiliser, but none were in critical condition.
