PIRATES off the coast of Togo have released a Greek-owned and Isle of Man-flagged oil tanker "Enegy Centurion" and its 23 Russian crew members after the pirates managed to discharge 3,000 tonnes of diesel fuel of the tanker's 50,000-tonne load.
The crew were returned unharmed but missing their personal belongings such as jewellery and money. The pirates escaped with the oil by the vessel's lifeboat, Reuters reported.
According to maritime security company, GAC Protective Solutions, pirates in this region are known for stealing cargo and crew possessions over a period of four to eight days, rather spending time negotiating ransom payments.
According to data from the UN's International Maritime Organisation (IMO) attacks in the region off the coast of Togo numbered eight so far this year but many attacks are unreported so the reality the incidence rate is higher.
