A CONTAINER has exploded at the Port of Crotone, Italy, killing three seafarers and injuring one, reports London's Port Technology.
The accident occurred on August 31 and the working deck of the offshore supply ship Asso. The explosion took place inside a container during welding operations.
The vessel was about to set sail for Malta.
Local land fire teams and tug were deployed, with the fire being extinguished in two hours.
The rescue team stated a fourth seafarer was taken to hospital with serious injuries, while a fifth was rescued and was in a state of confusion.
The welding machine and technical components that may be useful for the investigations have been seized.
'The Calabria Region expresses condolences to the families of the victims. Thanks to the rescuers and firefighters for their precious intervention, said president of the regional government Roberto Occhiuto.
CISL General Secretary Luigi Sbarra expressed his condolences and urged more awareness toward safety measures. 'The tragedy occurred today in the Port of Crotone is truly terrible,' he said.
