The 12th VTS Symposium – ‘Beyond the Limits’ was held from 10 - 14September, 2012 at the Lufti Kirdar Centre, Istanbul, Turkey, hosted by the Turkish Directorate General for Coastal Safety. The Symposium was attended by 335 delegates, plus many staff from the host country.
The delegates represented 41 countries, of which 26 were IALA national members.
The associated exhibition attracted 14 Industrial Members, displaying the latest developments in VTS. A series of 53 presentations were given under eleven broad headings:
· The role of VTS in Maritime Domain Awareness · The role of VTS operations in port / waterway efficiency · VTS beyond territorial seas and in polar regions · Future trends in VTS · VTS & e-Navigation · Information exchange & management · Innovations and Improvements in VTS Operations · VTS sensor and equipment improvements · Recruitment & professional competency · The role of VTS in reducing risk · Working towards mandatory VTS training & accreditationThe Conference also saw the publication of the latest edition of the IALA VTS Manual. The Conference identified 12 conclusions.
