Ten were killed and 17 people injured after a tugboat tilted on its side at the Alaybey Naval Shipyard in Izmir's Karsiyaka district on Monday.
The Turkish Naval Forces (TDK) tugboat, the TCG Degirmendere, was in the middle of an attempted launch into the waters of the Aegean Sea around midday following a repair. However, the boat started taking on water after it listed and eventually tilted fully onto one side.
Six of the wounded were taken to the Karsiyaka State Hospital and the other was taken to the Ege University Hospital for treatment. Rescue efforts are under way for the missing marine and two ship workers.
Turkish General Staff made a written statement on the accident. According to the statement the reason of the accident is yet unknown. Statement pointed out that the tugboat 'TCG Değirmendere' capsized during the floating dock was diving to float her. General Staff said that the injured 17 are in good health and there is no risk of further fatality due to the accident.
The investigation has been initiated.
