Surfacing submarine in collision with tanker off Gibraltar
On July 20, 2016, at 1.30 p.m. the "Andreas" which was transiting Gibraltar Strait in western direction en route to Setubal in full load was hit by the surfacing British nuclear submarine HMS "Ambush".
The uboat sustained damage to her conning tower, leaving the merchant vessel undamaged. HMS "Ambush" docked in Gibraltar just after 9 p.m. with some external damage.
The crash left caused damage to the conning tower and the sonar dome. No one was injured in the incident, which happend during the training of aspiring commanders at the time.
A Royal Navy investigation was examining wheth"er one of the officer trainees was in control when HMS Ambush" collided with the ship while at periscope depth. and there was no damage to the submarines nuclear core.
The tanker resumed sailing shortly after collision resumed and arrived at Setubal on July 22. Earlier her port of destination was identified as Rotterdam, ETA July 25, and changed with Setubal on arrival to Setubal.
The tanker had sailed from the port of Tuapse on July 10. On July 23, the tanker was still moored on Setubal anchorage.
