Ferry suffered a big hole portside (see photo), but managed to reach Gothenburg under own power, no injures reported. Name of the tanker not revealed yet, but there’s almost no doubt it’s product tanker TERNVIND , which was leaving Gothenburg bound for Halmstad with 10000 tons of diesel fuel on board. No leak reported so far, tanker is anchored near collision site.
Stena Jutlandica, engaging in traffic between Frederikshavn and Gothenburg, got holes in the hull during collisions and took in water.
The ferry could still go to the pier with her own power.
The tanker anchored in anticipation of daylight to examine the damage.
The tanker has not been named yet by local media, however it is believed to be Danish product tanker Ternvind (11,258 dwt, built 2008), which left Gothenburg en route to Halmstad late on Saturday night. AIS data shows the Terntank-owned vessel currently located near the scene of the accident.
No injuries
There are no reports of injuries, said Jesper Bäckstedt in Kustbevakningen.
Two tugs and a bilge vessels are in place by tanker, in case the collision would result in emissions.
The passengers were sleeping
Many of the passengers aboard the Stena Jutlandica were sleeping when the collision occurred in half three o'clock Saturday night.
There was unrest when people were awoken by the collision.
Some children began to cry and then went there quite a while before we were told that another vessel had collided us behind, telling a passenger to Aftonbladet.
How the accident happened? AIS Reconstruction
On the AIS track reconstruction seen below, the Stena Jutlandica seems not paying due attention in order to prevent the collision.
The tanker, too, delaying to alter the course to Starboard therefore it can also be said that a poor maneouvering has been made on the tanker side as well.
It seems a disaster could have happened.
