SMSGlobal Ltd has launched a maritime social networking portal, branded Se@MeNow, for seafarers to keep in touch with family and friends through social walls, photo sharing, video and voice chat as well as email.
The portal also enables users to shop and play games online and follow live updates on their favourite sports events, a company statement said.
At present 3,200 deep sea vessels are equipped with the company's CrewCommCenter system, with 125,000 seafarers exchanging 2.25 million messages per month to 1.3 million friends and loved ones on-shore.
Se@MeNow functions as the web mail service for subscribers using the CrewCommCenter system.
Seafarers can login with their CrewCommCenter ID to access Se@MeNow while they are on-shore leave, or located on Internet connected vessels that do not have the CrewCommCenter system installed on-board. Families can register an account on the Se@MeNow website.
"Social networking has become one of the most important parts of our daily life. With Internet connectivity becoming more prevalent on-board merchant vessels, a clear trend in communication is access to social networking sites and online chat.
"These ways of keeping contact with home adds significant value to the on-board communication services," said managing director Jan Andre Heggem.
