Six severely injured when ship hit with eight knots
Six of on the whole 233 passengers of the "Adler Express" were severely injured when the ship smashed into the quay at Wittdün with eight knots.
Several fell onto the decks, luggage was thrown around, many injured lay over each other, it was describes as chaos on deck. Many of the passengers had been standing waiting to disembark when the accident happened.
On the whole 27 people suffered injuries. The "Adler Expresss" was underway from the port Strucklahnungshörn upon Nordstrand and was underway to Hörnum upon Sylt via Amrum island. Witnesses remarked that the engine conked out when approaching Wittdün.
After the ship hit, the propellers were seen working. The captain said that the engine had not responded any more.
He warned the passengers before the impact. The federal Police, a lifeboat of the DGzRS, medicals, seven helicopters and ambulances as well as the German Army responded.
The fatally injured were transported to hospitals on the mainland, including the University Hospital in Kiel.
After treatment of the injured, accident experts boarded the ship for investigations.
