WORLD Direct Shipping's (WDS) weekly sailings from Veracruz, Mexico, to Port Manatee, Florida, provide a fresh cost-effective means to get produce to the tables of US consumers, reports the American Journal of Transportation.
Having completed its first year of 2 1/2-day transits, the WDS service is proving that water routings can furnish an alternative to a land transport that is often slowed by warehousing, rehandling and border delays.
"We're changing the whole dynamics with something new and innovative," said Carlos Diaz, a former major league ballplayer and CP Ships executive who now serves as co-commercial director of World Direct Shipping.
"They've got great produce in Southern Mexico, and now we've attached this product to the US market. We're past the one-year mark and haven't missed one call," he said.
The WDS service, for which reefer cargo has accounted for 70 per cent of imports in the first year, is now growing its export volume and is deploying a right-sized containership.
The replacement vessel, which has a capacity of 400 TEU and 120 reefer plugs, offers greater energy efficiency, including ability to smoothly transition to low-sulphur fuel when entering US emissions control zones.
Said commercial director Nate Tooley: "Fast roundtrip transit times, competitive pricing, higher payloads and consistent on-time performance have all contributed to our success in year one."
