Six saved following grounding off Aveiro
In the morning of 19, 2013, the MRCC Lisbon and the port authority of Aveiro coordinated the rescue of the six crew members of the "Merle" which had run aground enroute El Ferrol-Huelva on the beach of Torreira, near Aveiro.
The MRCC Lisbon was notified at 8:27 a.m. after the ship had suffered water Ingress in the engine room in severe weather, and dispatched an an Alouette III based in Ovar and a EH-101 helicopter based in Montijo of the Portuguese Navy.
The Alouette III located the vessel. Around 9 a.m. it went aground on the sandbanks next to the San Jacinto area, off the Aveiro port entrance which was closed at that time for safety reasons. The crew, five from Turkey and one from Azerbeijan, was saved to shore by the port captain, the Maritime Police and the lifeboat station Aveiro.
All crew members were transported to the hospital in Aveiro in stable condition. Five of them were to be released in the afternoon, one should remain some time under observation in the hospital of Aveiro, since he complained of chest pains.
