Shantou port's X-ray container inspection facility soon operational
A LARGE new container inspection facility at the Guang'ao port area at southern China's Shantou port has passed inspection test from the customs and will soon to be put into use, Xinhua reports.
The facility, named H986, also known as the "container X-ray machine", uses X-ray to scan containers, dispensing with the need to open the box. Introduction of the facility, which takes only five minutes to scan a container, is expected to greatly enhance customs clearance efficiency as Guang'ao port area's container throughput continues to grow.
So far in 2012, the Guang'ao port area customs has handled 1,096 vessels carrying a total of 63,457 TEU of trade cargo. 595 were carrying imports, 501 were carrying exports. In 2011, the port area handled 3.9 million tonnes. Though the port is affected by economic downturn in 2012, it managed to achieve a throughput of 3.1 million tonnes from January to November.
Guang'ao port area is operating three international shipping lines. One is an intra-Asia service calling at Shantou, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Singapore, the other two are African services, one calling at Shanghai, Ningbo, Fuzhou, Xiamen, Shantou, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Africa, Cote d'Ivoire, Togo, Nigeria, Singapore and Shanghai, another calling at Ningbo, Shanghai, Shantou, Hong Kong, Shenzhen's Chiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Congo, Angola, South Africa, Malaysia and Ningbo.
