SHANGHAI's containerised foreign trade volumes are estimated to have a slight growth by the end of the year to exceed 30 million TEU, remaining number one in the world despite global demand shrinkage and slowdown in domestic economy, Xinhua reports.
Zhang Chaomei, director of Shanghai Port Service Office, said on a recent meeting that though foreign trade in the Yangtze River Delta is weakening, the trans-regional customs clearance cooperation, which is prevalent in China, has boosted foreign trade transshipments from the central and western regions via Shanghai.
During the first three quarters, Shanghai International Port Group handled 24.22 million TEU, up 1.9 per cent year on year, or 377 million tonnes, up 4.2 per cent. By the end of the year, the port is expected to maintain its world's record of 30 million TEU, which was first made in 2011.
From January to September, trade value of the six central provinces, namely Hunan, Hubei, Jiangxi, Anhui, Henan and Shanxi, totalled US$138.4 billion, accounting for five per cent of China's total and growing two percentage points compared to 2006.
The trans-regional customs clearance cooperation has cemented the trade cooperative ties between Shanghai and Chongqing, Sichuan. 90 per cent of Chongqing's waterway cargo and one third of its airfreight are currently transshipped through Shanghai. Sixty per cent of Sichuan province's trade cargo undertake the transshipments via Shanghai.
In the first nine months of the year, Chongqing's trade value surged 120 per cent year on year to $40 billion while Sichuan's grew 28 per cent to $43 billion.
