EASTERN Shandong province recorded a year-on-year increase of 15.4 per cent in the volume of containers handled by its seaports in January, to a collective sum of 1.78 million TEU with overall tonnage rising 14 per cent to a new monthly record of 98 million tonnes.
Foreign trade cargo handled by these ports in the same month increased 10 per cent to 59.02 million tonnes, said Xinhua.
The three largest of its ports, Qingdao, Rizhao and Yantai, contributed 85.3 million tonnes to the province's sea port throughput and accounted for 87 per cent of total throughput.
Port of Qingdao handled 39.6 million tonnes, up 15 per cent. Rizhao lifted 26.76 million tonnes, up 11 per cent. Yantai's throughput grew 11 per cent to 18.94 million tonnes. Another major port of Weihai lifted 4.94 million tonnes, 22 per cent more than in the same month last year.
