SEATTLE suffered a 16 per cent year-on-year decline in container throughput in July to 134,864 TEU, while volumes in the first seven month plunged 21.2 per cent to 925,284 TEU.
Total international container throughput was down 21.3 per cent in July year-on-year, reports Newark's Journal of Commerce. From January to July volumes declined by 25.8 per cent, with full containerised imports down 27.1 per cent compared to the same period last year to 334,614 TEU and full containerised exports down 9.1 per cent to 268,193 TEU.
Excluding empties, international container volume in July fell 19 per cent year on year and 24 per cent from January to July. On the other hand, domestic container throughput rose 1.3 per cent year to date to 202,107 TEU.
Leaving out the Grand Alliance departure to Tacoma, Seattle's containerised exports were up 4.2 per cent in the first seven months of the year, said the report.
Overall, as a region, container throughput at the ports of Seattle and Tacoma declined 8.3 per cent in July compared to the same month last year and dropped two per cent year to date.
