HONG KONG administered, but Vancouver headquartered, Seaspan Corporation announced that it has signed a long-term, fixed-rate time charter contracts with Yang Ming Marine Transport for the five 14,000-TEU newbuildings.
Seaspan, a shipowner charterer, previously announced the vessels, to be delivered in 2015, will be built at Korea's Hyundai Heavy Industries, according to contracts signed in July.
Seaspan also announced that it has entered into commitments with CSBC Corporation Taiwan (CSBC) to have constructed and acquire five more 14,000-TEU ships for US$550 million.
Seaspan has also signed a binding letter of intent with Yang Ming to enter into long-term, fixed-rate time charters for the five vessels. said a Seaspan statement, adding that these vessels are to be delivered in 2016.
"This order demonstrates our ability to draw upon our financial strength and technical and operational expertise to place large scale orders that realise economies of scale and deliver accretive growth to our shareholders," said Seaspan CEO Gerry Wang.
With this order, Seaspan's managed fleet, including both Seaspan and GCI newbuilds on order, will be close to 100 ships. The company's current operating fleet of 71 vessels has an average age and remaining lease period of six years.
The latest ten 14,000-TEUers, using Seaspan's fuel efficient SAVER design, remain subject to allocation in relation to the right of first refusal agreement with Greater China Intermodal Investments LLC, an investment vehicle established by Seaspan, an affiliate of global alternative asset manager The Carlyle Group, and Blue Water Commerce, LLC said the release.
