Ghanaian and Nigerian armed forces are pursuing a search mission on Ghanaian territorial waters for a missing oil tanker carrying a Liberian flag, reports said on Tuesday. Speaking to the state radio station in Accra, Lt. Colonel Addo Quarshie of Ghana Armed Forces confirmed media reports that a Liberian oil tanker was missing in the Ghanaian territorial waters but could not tell whether it was attacked by pirates.
He said the event was first of its kind to occur in Ghanaian waters.
West African territorial waters are gradually becoming breeding grounds for piracy owing to the booming oil industry along the coast.
