THE Port of Savannah has docked its largest ever, the 10,000-TEU Zim Tainjin, which is nearly as long as New York City's Empire State Building is tall, say the proud press release from the Georgia Port Authority (GPA).
"This 10,000-TEU vessel represents the future of US-Asia shipping," said GPA executive director Curtis Foltz. "The Tianjin is another example of a growing trend in the ocean carrier business toward larger, more efficient vessels."
The vessel's route originated in Qingdao and came to the US via Suez.
"The port call by the ZIM Tianjin is another example of the strong and long standing professional relationship between GPA and ZIM," said ZIM vice president Brian Black.
"The economy of scale achieved by super postpanamax vessels is the reason we're seeing more of them in Savannah, a trend that will only continue after an expanded Panama Canal opens in 2016," said Mr Folz
To accommodate mega ships the main channel will be dredged to 47 feet at low water on an 18 mile stretch of the 40-mile route to the sea. This month, the US Army Corps of Engineers issued a US$134.5 million to start dredging.
After leaving the Garden City Terminal, the Tianjin's next stop is Kingston, Jamaica.
