GEORGIA ports, principally Savannah, handled 274,362 TEU in October, an increase of 19 per cent, or 43,723 TEU, compared to the same month a year ago.
For the fiscal year to date the total rose 5.3 per cent compared to the same period a year earlier to 1.06 million TEU.
A statement from the Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) said its ports handled a record 2.54 million tons of cargo in October, up 22 per cent year on year.
The Colonel's Island Terminal at the Port of Brunswick and Savannah's Ocean Terminal combined moved a record 62,343 units of automobiles and heavy machinery in October, an increase of 19.2 per cent over October 2012.
October growth pushed total tonnage to 9.6 million for the fiscal year to date, a 9.2 per cent increase over the same period in FY2013.
"Strong growth, new customer accounts and additional harbour deepening funding announced this month are all positive signs that Georgia's ports are moving in the right direction," said GPA executive director Curtis Foltz.
In another development, the GPA board has dedicated US$8 million to expand its programme to electrify the rubber-tyre gantry cranes used to handle containers at the Garden City Terminal. The new technology cuts diesel consumption by an estimated 95 per cent per crane.
During the programme's first phase in the previous fiscal year, four RTG cranes were electrified. The next phase of the project will expand the electrification system to a wider area and convert 10 cranes from diesel to electric power.
