THE Port of Savannah posted a 10.2 per cent year-on-year increase in 2014 container volume to 3.34 million TEU as well as a 7.4 per cent rise in overall tonnage to 30.39 million tons.
"We saw phenomenal growth in every category," said Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) executive director Curtis Foltz.
"Georgia's ports benefited from an improving retail economy, renewed strength in manufacturers' orders of raw goods, and the expanding population of the Southeast," he said.
The ro-ro Port of Brunswick moved 688,575 units for the year. Combined with ro-ro trade through Savannah's Ocean Terminal, GPA moved 716,055 units in 2014, an 8.6 per cent year-on-year increase.
Breakbulk cargo, such as forest products, iron and steel was up 12 per cent, or 294,466 tons to 2.74 million tons. Bulk such as gypsum, wood pellets and farm products increased 5.7 per cent (152,987 tons) to 2.81 million tons, said the GPA.
December ro-ro volume was up 20.1 per cent to 68,684 automotive and heavy equipment units while December also posted an 18 per cent year-on-year container throughput increase to 42,333 TEU, up 12.9 per cent.
The GPA approved the purchase of 10 new rubber-tyre gantries (RTG) in an addition to a May order for 20 RTGs, bringing the total to 146.
Said Georgia Governor Nathan Deal: "GPA's great performance over the past year is a testament to Georgia's superior logistics network, starting with port terminals that have flawlessly taken on more business while still ensuring on-time, reliable delivery."
"Commerce has chosen Savannah as the Southeast's busiest port for containerised cargo," said GPA board chairman James Walters. "With construction beginning on the Savannah Harbour deepening, the Jimmy Deloach Parkway extension moving toward completion, and our continued on-terminal investment, we are solidifying our role as a logistics hub."
