THE "explosive" growth of e-commerce is being retarded by tax collection regimes in some countries that nullify same-day delivery gains achieved by couriers and retailers, according to the UK's Transport Intelligence.
A big boost in popularity comes from same-day deliveries, once the sole offering of couriers and local truckers, but today's larger organisations, UPS and the US Postal Service, are testing ways to do the same.
"E-commerce saw a large number of same-day delivery programmes introduced in 2012," said Ti analyst Cathy Roberson, the report's author. "Although many programmes are only offered in a few local markets, it is likely same-day offerings will expand as e-commerce grows."
But Canada, Mexico, and to a lesser extent the US, have retarded e-commerce growth through slowdowns imposed by customs duties and state sales tax collection, said the report.
"Customs clearance are problems in any country, but they are most notable in Canada and Mexico, where there are few large e-commerce players within the countries' borders. Even US is challenged by state sales taxes," she said.
Ti estimates that the e-commerce logistics market size was over US$40 billion in 2012, and it is expected to grow over 10 per cent through 2015.
"Although the US will account for almost 90 per cent of this market, the continued expansion of e-commerce in Canada and Mexico will likely keep pace as they find ways to overcome challenges," she said.
"As online orders increase, retailers will need to keep up or risk losing out to companies that can perform better. It's evident from the recent numbers of Cyber Monday purchases in the US that e-commerce will continue to grow as more consumers are exposed to shopping online," Ms Roberson said.
