RUSSIA's biggest intermodal operator TransContainer has posted a three per cent year-on-year first half pretax profit increase to RUB3.6 billion (US$109.2 million) drawn on revenues of RUB18.2 billion, up 3.5 per cent.
Its rail container volume fell 2.2 per cent to 701,000 TEU in the first half with revenue from this segment down two per cent. Terminal handling volumes in Russia fell 9.6 per cent to 621,000 TEU.
But Kazahstan volumes increased 944 per cent during the six month period to 94,000 TEU year on year. The increase in terminal handling volumes increased 49 per cent to 103,000 TEU, attributed to Dostyk cross-border terminal traffic.
The Russian Railways' subsidiary has forecast continued growth since it began moderate increases in March 2013 with the rest of the year producing single-digit growth.
It aims to improve services in the face of increasing competition and weaker demand for rail cargo with little room for pricing improvements in the near term, said Transcontainer in a statement.
