THE Port of Rotterdam increased first quarter container volume 7.3 per cent year on year to 3.7 million TEU, mainly a 'consequence of a sharp rise in transshipment volumes originating in Asia' said the port authority.
Shipping companies, in three large alliances, have made Rotterdam a hub, resulting in feeder tonnage continuing to increase significantly by 15.1 per cent to 7.3 million tonnes.
Breakbulk and ro-ro increased 9.2 per cent to 7.9 million tonnes. Ro-ro was up 10 per cent to 6.4 million tonnes. Volumes increased significantly in March in connection with Brexit. Breakbulk rose 3.1 per cent to 1.5 million tonnes.
Liquid bulk increased 4.6 per cent to 58.5 million tonnes with 10.4 per cent more crude oil to 28.1 million tonnes. This difference concerned the increased supply of oil from the US. This oil is relatively cheap and ensures higher margins for the refineries.
Said Port of Rotterdam Authority CEO Allard Castelein: 'We had an excellent start to 2019. The quarterly figures also confirm that Rotterdam is again strengthening its position as storage and transport hub for containers and LNG.'
