THE Port of Hamburg regained its second place behind Rotterdam as a European container port as it surpassed Antwerp with a 15.3 per cent year-on-year increase in the first nine months to 6.8 million TEU.
"We don't expect to see a decline in the seaborne trade with the important markets of China, Asia, America and the countries in the Baltic region," said Port of Hamburg Marketing CEO Claudia Roller, with her forecast of a full-year of 14 per cent increase to nine million TEU and an overall tonnage of 133 million tons, up 10 per cent.
Hamburg outpaced Antwerp, the second largest port in Europe, which increased volume 3.1 per cent to 6.5 million TEU, and compared to Europe's top box Port of Rotterdam's eight per cent increase to nine million TEU.
This acceleration was attributed to an increase in container shipments within the Baltic Sea Region, up 28 per cent together with north east Asia volumes which rose 12 per cent. During the reported period ending September, the port's top container stevedore HHLA experienced a strong increase of traffic at 5.3 million TEU, a 24.8 per cent increase.
