JAN De Nul Group and Saipem have been awarded the job to expand the 450,000-TEU capacity PSA Panama terminal to two million TEU by dredging to 16.3 metres and building an 800-metre quay on the Pacific side.
The expanded terminal is scheduled to be operational in the first half of 2017 and will have an annual capacity of two million TEU and be able to handle two mega ships simultaneously.
New container handling equipment will include eight new quay cranes for super-postpanamax vessels as well as 12 rail mounted gantries, reports St Petersburg's PortNews.
The dredging works will be executed by Jan De Nul Group, while the quay wall extension has been awarded to the joint venture Jan De Nul-Saipem.
"Jan De Nul and Saipem have completed several major construction projects in Latin America, making this combined expertise a great added value to build a more robust terminal infrastructure in Panama," said PSA Panama general manager Alessandro Cassinelli.
The terminal currently offers 330-metres of berthing space and is equipped with three quay cranes and nine yard cranes.
