NORTH Europe Global Port Tracker expects a 1.8 per cent growth in container throughput in Northern Range ports in 2015.
In 2014, North European containerised imports increased 9.5 per cent while exports rose 8.4 per cent.
Alphaliner's reported that total weekly capacity on the Asia-to-North Europe route is expected to rise 9.1 per cent this year as carriers replace existing vessels with larger ships.
Ocean 3 and CKYHE alliances will each increase capacity 15 per cent. The 2M alliance is expected to increase it by 6.5 per cent, while G6 is to add one per cent, Alphaliner said.
The report, the work of Washington, DC area Hackett Associates and Bremen's Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics, said more investments are being made in eastern European countries closer to end markets on the continent.
Increases in consumer confidence haven't translated into consumer spending growth, said Ben Hackett, founder of Hackett Associates.
"These are changes that the container shipping industry needs to take into account when they consider their investments in additional capacity," said Mr Hackett.
