THE Port of Virginia posted a 13 per cent year-on-year increase in box volume in May to a record 230,511 TEU, surpassing the March record of 229,000 TEU.
Year to date the port posted 9.5 per cent increase in throughput compared with the same period last year, reports the Richmond Times Dispatch.
"We are on pace to show significant growth - set records - for both the calendar and fiscal year," said Virginia Port Authority CEO John Reinhart.
The port authority has earmarked space for a temporary stack yard for intermodal rail containers at Virginia International Gateway to be operational by July.
This will adding 1,000 new chassis to Hampton Roads Chassis Pool by summer's end and involve a US$40 million investment on container handling equipment.
