GAC EnvironHull has been authorised by Oman's Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs to conduct eco-friendly underwater hull cleaning operations at the port of Sohar, just outside the Gulf of Hormuz.
The cleaning operations will be carried out by a remotely operated vehicle (ROV), using the company's brush-and-diver-free HullWiper system, while the ship is at berth for loading or unloading.
It is the fourth port in the Middle East to use the ship cleaning system after Dubai, Fujairah and Sharjah in the UAE, as well as Gothenburg in Sweden.
The hull cleaning system uses adjustable pressure seawater jets, resulting in minimal damage to the antifouling surface. Residues and harmful marine growths captured during cleaning are disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner instead of being discharged into the sea
Said GAC EnvironHull managing director Simon Doran: "Sohar was a natural choice for the next base due to its location close to international trade routes. As such, it is a port of call for many ships carrying general cargo, liquid shipments and containers."
